Molecular Biology Laboratory

    Head: Dr. Fabiana Colelli

    The molecular biology unit conducts experimental activities on biological molecules such as DNA, RNA and proteins.

    Its main activities include:

    • Isolation and purification of DNA/RNA from cells and tissues to analyze their sequence, structure and function;
    • DNA amplification (PCR) to amplify specific DNA fragments, making them easier to study;
    • Analysis of Gene Expression in cells and tissues under specific conditions, using techniques such as Real Time-PCR.
    • Analysis of Proteins to understand their function and interactions, using techniques such as Western Blot, ELISA;
    • Study of Molecular Interactions, such as how drugs bind to their molecular targets.

    These techniques are used in different experimental studies of basic research, translational and regulatory (in compliance with GLP standards). The unit conducts the following activities specifically:

    • To develop and validate (also in compliance with GLP standards) analytical methods, based on PCR and Real-time PCR techniques, for the analysis of nucleic acids in cells, tissues and biological matrices;
    • To perform studies for the determination, quantification and biodistribution of biological drugs (for example DNA or RNA vaccines, ATMPs - advanced therapy medicinal products, antibodies), in compliance with GLP standards and international guidelines;
    • To perform studies of gene expression analysis and molecular interaction following genetic modifications or pharmacological treatments.
